Computer Tip: Slow Computer

Computer Tip

Have you ever wondered why your PC is running slow? If the answer is yes then here are a few solutions and causes of this issue.

Possible Causes

  1. Too many programs running
  2. Low memory
  3. Viruses
  4. low hard drive space
  5. Hardware conflicts
  6. Bad, corrupted, or fragmented hard drive
  7. Updates & Drivers
  8. Clean out your registry
  9. Overheating
  10. Too old

Computer Tip number one

  1.  Sometimes when you first purchased that fancy new computer it normally comes with programs you don’t need 🙁 and over time as you use your computer the more programs there are. A quick fix would involve uninstalling programs you don’t use but be careful not to uninstall the wrong ones. Even programs running in the background can take up resources.

Computer Tip number two

2. Do you know how much memory your computer has? Depending on your computers operating system & hardware will determine how much memory you can install.Once installed you will see a noticeable difference.

Computer Tip number three

3. Ahhhhhhh those pesky viruses are so annoying and can even wreak havoc on your computer. Without the proper antivirus software you won’t have much of a defense against viruses. Fortunately its possible to scan your PC for those critters. If that doesn’t work at all then I would recommend reinstalling the operating system and starting fresh.

Computer Tip number four

4. The dreaded low hard drive space with its low hard drive space message down in the notification area. This is actually a simple fix but it can actually be a little time consuming depending on the size of your hard drive. To fix this problem you must uninstall or move files and programs you use or may not use. For best results look for programs that take up the most space and uninstall them.

Computer Tip number five

5. Hardware conflicts could affect your computer in a couple ways. If you’ve installed new hardware and you noticed a change in your computers performance like slow downs then more than likely that hardware may have compatibility issues.

Computer Tip number six

6. This can be a big issue HERE! Your hard drive is THE most important part of your computer in my opinion. As I’ve mentioned before when you’ve purchased that brand spanken new computer normally programs & files start to clutter the hard drive. When that happens its best to defragment your hard drive. Normally I would do it after a couple months.

7. This next issue can be annoying when it happens. I’m sure many of you have heard the expression Newer isn’t always better. That saying goes well for updates & drivers. Installing new updates can be as simple as 1,2,3, however there are times when installing new updates on your computer can cause some issues. A few years ago I’ve this very situation happen to me before. As I have mentioned before I am a avid video gamer and I purchased a new video card (EVGA Geforce 465 GTX). During this time I’ve had performance issues with the card and unfortunately it took over a year for the manufactures to come up with stable drivers.

Computer Tip number eight

8. The registry is a place where all your information for your computer is stored (user account, login passwords, etc). Personally I wouldn’t tinker with the registry because theirs a strong possibility you may cause problems for your computer. But if you insist their are programs that can go through the registry and scan for information that no longer maybe relevant to your computer. As a final note be careful of which programs you download, and be sure to read other users reviews & recommendations.

Computer Tip number nine

9. Does your computer a lot of heat?  If so there are couple solutions to fix this problem. Dust is a computers worst nightmare and if you can see dust without opening your computers side panel than yes it needs to be cleaned. A small paint brush or an air can will work just fine. You’ll want to make sure to clean each section inside your computer. It helps to check the inside of your computer every couple of months depending on how your computer is situated. Failure to do so will cause your computer to run hotter which causes it to work harder and can cause system instability.

10.The uneventful end of a computers usefulness is when it gets old. After long periods of use computers depreciate just like a car which leaves you only a few options. Number 1 is of course buy another computer and keep the old one as a backup. Number 2 is upgrade your computer (memory, hard drive, sound card, power supply, video cards etc).
