Computer Service – Prepare for the worst!!!

Most all of us have at one point in our lives howled in frustration at the fact that we just lost an important document. We may have accidently deleted it, the computer lost power without saving it there is all kinds of things that happen to documents.

I have lost plenty of college and high school projects that way and have had to deal with re writing everything….especially frustrating when you are just about done!

Computer Service tip number 1:

There are ways that this is fixable. My fist suggestion as a “pro is to save, save and save! It does not matter if you are done editing, need to re-read your work; need to run the spell check.

Save that work every few paragraphs or more often! Save it EVERY time you walk away from the computer, you never know who will unplug it, if there is a power surge etc.

This can save a lot of heart ache in advance. You can always go back and edit and resave, but once it is gone it is scary that you may never get your work back although we will go over some ways to do so.

Computer Service tip number 2: Advanced approach

If you run into the situation where you have deleted a file, you first need to make sure that you do not run any program or file until you have retrieved the file. It may still be there but the computer considers this to be “free space” that it can write over.

You will need to download; preferably in advance of the incident free file recovery software such as Recuva (available at piriform.com) thesoftware will come with a “wizard” that will help you through the process. If the data is recoverable then usually the software will find it for you and restore it.

Computer Service tip number 3: Novice approach

Some computers will allow you to go back and retrieve the file from the recycle bin, Windows 7 allows you to search for the file there and follow directions to restore it.

Even those of us who are very careful with our work lose it sometimes. Your best bet is to be careful, but if a mistake is made most times the newer computer software is very forgiving and will let you fix it.

Cleveland PC Service – Refurbished computer

With so many options available in computers and new ones coming out every day it can be frustrating finding the right computer for you.

Once you find the right one, you discover a few weeks later that a newer better version has just come out. This leaves us with the question of whether or not to consider purchasing a refurbished computer.

Cleveland PC Service number 1:

Unless electronic equipment is damaged beyond all repair, it will normally end up being refurbished and placed back on the shelf, often at a much lower price point than a brand new item.

Of course, the price is a definite plus when considering a refurbished computer! Legally, these computers MUST be labeled as refurbished so you don’t have to worry when
you are purchasing a brand new computer that you will be getting a bad deal.

Cleveland PC Service number 2: What exactly is a refurbished computer?

Often times a “refurbished” computer has actually never been used; the end consumer could have ordered the wrong thing, opened the box and returned it….without using it! So essentially you are getting an AWESOME bargain since it can’t be sold as brand new, but you will be able to pay the lesser price.

Cleveland PC Service number 3:

Even if a computer has been used, it is put through a rigorous testing process before being sold.  It is wiped clean and any new parts needed are replaced. It is tested and retested to make sure that you are getting a quality product.

Cleveland PC Service  number 4: Pro’s & Cons Part 1

pros-and-cons_6354749_lrg

The downside of purchasing refurbished is that it is not “brand new” some people just HAVE to have the brand new car, brand new house, and brand new everything-it’s psychological.

If you get the heebie jeebies at the thought of using something someone else has, I would not suggest refurbished, no matter how broke you are since you probably will just not be happy using it.

Cleveland PC Service  number 5: Pro’s & Cons Part 2

Another downside may be that you may not be able to customize your computer. You also have to be careful to make sure that it’s not sold “as is” and that it has all the components such as usb ports that you might be looking for. Also if you are planning on connecting existing components such as a gaming system make sure that everything is compatible.

Cleveland PC Service  number 6: Final Thoughts

I would definitely consider purchasing a refurbished computer. In the long run you are saving money and getting an excellent product.

Do not be afraid to ask detailed questions about the computer before shelling out your hard earned money. Many store representatives will gladly help you toward getting the computer that meets your needs.

PC Troubleshooting – Ways your computer may slow down!!!

PC Troubleshooting

PC Troubleshooting

One of the most common complaints of PC users is a slow computer. Having a slow computer can & will drive anyone insane. From having a slow internet connection to having an unresponsive PC.

For today’s topic I want to go over a couple more reasons very quickly as to why your computer may slow down.

Click here to talk to The PC Doctor Now!

PC Troubleshooting tip number 1:

So what causes a computer to slow down? There are a few factors that we will go over that you can take preventative measures to keep from happening. One of the most obvious things that will slow down your computer is having a virus.

A virus can be picked up at any web site even at ones that are supposed to be trustworthy. Hackers can attach a virus to any software; look at the Target credit card fiasco! Your best preventative measure is going to be biting the bullet and investing in a good anti-virus program.

Most will help clear up the issue as well as prevent future problems. If this doesn’t work you can feel free to contact me directly.

PC Troubleshooting tip number 2:

Another issue you may be having is that your registry is full or you have corrupted files somewhere in your computer. Everything you do on the computer is doubled and there is saved files and
fragments you don’t even know about.

Your best bet in this case is to download a free copy of CC cleaner, a product I have been using for years. This can be found through a site called file hippo. It fixes registry issues and deletes files
that are not needed; usually I have 200+ megabytes to delete.

PC Troubleshooting

The nice thing is that it’s free and it’s automated, for those of us who can maneuver a computer but are not totally savvy at everything.

PC Troubleshooting tip number 3:

So, when your computer is running slow the best thing to do is to start with the above steps. There is also tons of information available online as well as information to be found on your computer. There are several utilities you can use to maintain & manage your computer. Typically these feautures are easy to use by just following the on screen directions.
