For today’s topic I want to go over the possibility of accidentally losing or forgetting your password. Now I know many of us don’t think this will ever happen but it wouldn’t hurt to prepare for this situation.

To combat this unforeseen problem there are several solutions you can do to fix this situation.

PC Logic – Computer Tip: Number One

The first step for ensuring this doesn’t happen to you is to prepare for the future.

Always document all your current passwords and keep them somewhere safe for the inevitable.

You never know when that day will come when you forget your password.

First and foremost you should ask yourself this question.

Is it even necessary to have a password? I say that because some of us are good at remembering passwords and others not so much.

So with that in mind if you think you might be able to remember your password then the best option is not to have one.

PC Logic – Computer Tips: Number Two

Perhaps a simple way to reset your password is to use and create a password reset disc.

The way to create a password reset disc is if you can log into your computer as either an administrator or another user.

Windows Vista, 7, and 8

If you are unable to log into your desktop you can write your password incorrect a couple of times and then you will see this message.

Another good way is to log onto your computer as the administrator. If you can’t log into your main account you maybe able to log in by accessing safemode. Once inside safemode you can either erase or change the password.

PC Logic – Computer Tips: Number Five:

If all else fails you can try third party software. This approach may or may not work so it couldn’t hurt to try. Personally I do not a password for any of my computers so use these programs at your own discretion. Below is a couple of programs that may help.

Ophcrack

With Ophcrack, you can create a live CD that has a bootable operating system that will let you start Windows. From there, the program automates the retrieval, decryption and cracking of Windows passwords. If your password has 14 alphanumeric characters or fewer, the program should be able to crack it within minutes.

UBCD

Ultimate Boot CD runs independently of any operating system. It will boot from any Intel-compatible machine, regardless of whether DOS/Windows/Linux/BeOS is installed on the machine. However, you do need an operating system and a ISO-capable CD writer software to create the Ultimate Boot CD from the downloaded ISO image file.

PC Logic – Computer Tips: Number Six:

For step number six which is a very simple approach and it takes about 10 minutes to complete unless none of my other tips work for you. Look inside your computer on the motherboard and you will see a silver battery the size of a quarter.

Take it out and wait at least a few minutes and then put it back in and power on your computer. Now keep in mind this tip doesn’t work all the time but it is worth a shot.

PC Logic – Computer Tips: Number Seven:

If none of the options above work then as a final option I recommend reinstalling the operating system if you cannot gain access to your system. If you have important data on your computer then you should take out the hard drive and either attach it to an external hard drive enclosure or connect it to your computer.
