Parental controls – Computer Tip of the week: 9/18/2013

How to setup parental controls

For today’s computer tip of the week I want to talk about how you can setup and modify parental control settings. This includes internet browsers like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Google Chrome. Depending on which browser you use I will show directions on how to access these features.

parental controls – Computer Tip Number One: Internet Explorer

The toolbar icon can be located in the top right corner of the screen. Under the contact adviser you can control what gets shown on the internet. The parental controls section is located directly above the content adviser. Remember that if you are currently logged on as the administrator you will not be able to set parental control settings. If you have other user accounts that are not an administrator then yes the parental control options would be active.

parental controls – Computer Tip Number Two: Google Chrome

Google doesn’t necessarily have parental control settings within the browser. There are some setting to adjust how your browser performs. Recently Google has released a parental controls app where you can have multiple accounts and be able to adjust the current level.

The app is called parental controls app and to download the app go to your extensions under the settings section.

parental controls – Computer Tip Number Three: Mozilla Firefox

For Mozilla Firefox the parental controls is similar to Google Chrome. The browser does have individual settings you can change to accept or block certain content: however it doesn’t have this feature embedded within the browser.

To get parental controls for your browser you must download it through the add-ons  section under tools.

You have the choice of choosing between Fox Filter, Blocksi, & Web Filter from MetaCert.

Computer Tip Number Four: Opera

Just like Google Chrome and Firefox unfortunately there isn’t any parental control settings build into the opera browser. In order to have parental controls you must download an add-on for your browser.

Final Thoughts

Whichever browser you choose you will find that there is always an option to select. The add-ons mentioned are actually free for you to download but there are some that charge for the software.
